What is “Beyond” in “Alexander Technique and Beyond?”
While my work is often healing in many ways, it is not in the form of treatments. Rather, each person gets to connect with their own Inner Wisdom through one of the modalities, and through practice, they can access this source of wisdom and healing for themselves. I am there both for instruction and support—a guide, if you will.
Healing happens because it is the “way of things”— our birthright, as Barbara Brennan calls it in her book, Light Emerging.
I use the word healing in the way Christiane Northrup, M. D. defines it in her book, Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom:
There is a difference between healing and curing. Healing is a natural process and is within everyone. Curing is what doctors are called upon to do . . . Healing goes deeper than curing . . . It addresses the imbalance that underlies the symptoms. Healing brings together the often hidden aspects of a person’s life as they relate to [the] illness. Healing is different from curing, though curing and the restoration of physical function may accompany healing. . . Healing and death are not mutually exclusive.

Since we are multi-dimensional beings yet at the same time a unity of all those dimensions, no matter the modality I am using, growth and healing can happen in any or all of the realms: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Indeed, so unified are they, that we can approach an issue from any direction and it will affect all the dimensions.
This is truly holistic and amazing!
With this in mind, the energy work I do addresses the invisible part of our being—what the ancients called the “aura” and what Brennan and other healers call “the human energy field.” Although I may actually touch the body of the one on the table, I may also simply work in the energy field to clear and “de-tangle” the field so that flow can happen. When the energy can flow freely, health ensues. On the other hand, when the energy cannot flow freely because of a variety of reasons, some kind of “dis-ease” follows.
In truth, since everything is energy (thank you, quantum physics!), whatever we do influences our energy fields, both individual and collective. Thus the Alexander Technique and other modalities can effect healing, just as can energy work. When a student asks me what the difference is, I say this:
When you are in “Alexander mode,” you are a student and actively engaged in learning. When you are receiving energy work, you can be much less mentally active. In fact, one reason energy work is so effective is that it helps bypass the “monkey mind”—which is overly busy with thoughts that cause stress and anxiety.
